1st epistle/letter of John Ch5
A letter of reminders, righteousness, love and prophesy.
1Jn 5 - ASV
1. Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is begotten of God: and whosoever loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
There is a sign for belonging to God. It is clear as day and night. No "but". No "if". No "as if".
Jesus is not just some wise statesman. He is the Christ, the Messiah. Jesus is the Anointed. Anything short of that is lies from the antichrists. This is an absolute standard. No compromise.
Christians have integrity. Christians are not just soft and wet.
There is such a unity in the Godhead and christians, that loving one must at the same time love the rest. There is no partiality. There is no loneliness. There is no singling out. There is no bias. There is absolute fellowship.
A battle of belief - whether Jesus is what He claimed to be, the Christ of God; the Meshiah.
2. Hereby we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and do his commandments.
The children of God are our brethren.
No excuse for not doing/keeping His commandments; His love.
Doing any other thing is not loving the children of God.
Christians are not supposed to love the world. Not all in the world are children of God. Some are of the devil. They practice lawlessness. Their desires are of selfish gain.
3. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
Love is not an abstract thing.
The love of God is tangible and righteous.
We love if we keep His commandments. This is a definition of love.
We are nothing if we do not keep His commandments. We would not be able to love God, the righteous one.
All other ground are sinking sand.
We do not have a sad God. We can rejoice in God.
4. For whatsoever is begotten of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that hath overcome the world, even our faith.
Reminding that christians have power to overcome the world through the Most High.
Our "faith" has overcome the world.
Our faith in Christ cause us whiter than snow. Sin has no more grib on us. We are free and new in Christ.
This assumes that God overcomes the world. No proof is pursued.
It is also natural that the creator overcomes the creation, and what can only function in the creation.
Those who are made of the same substance of God also overcome the world. Naturally so!
The process is being of God rather than being with God.
5. And who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
We have overcome the world in our faith. In Him we are more than conqueror.
A question to concentrate the thought. A focal point. A shoot off point. This is not the end, but the beginning of something much greater than what was apparent.
6. This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood.
By the water of John the Baptist, and the blood shedded on the cross. Clear manifestation.
There must be the shedding of blood.
7. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is the truth.
The Spirit mentioned again.
The Spirit is God to be the truth.
So God bears the witness.
8. For there are three who bear witness, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and the three agree in one.
The witness of men is not strong enough.
The witness that men accept and take is sufficient.
Blood - Suffering is part of the necessary witness.
9. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for the witness of God is this, that he hath borne witness concerning his Son.
10. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in him: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he hath not believed in the witness that God hath borne concerning his Son.
11. And the witness is this, that God gave unto us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12. He that hath the life; he that hath not the Son of God hath not the life.
13. These things have I written unto you, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, even unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God.
14. And this is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us:
15. and if we know that he heareth us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.
16. If any man see his brother sinning a sin not unto death, he shall ask, and God will give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: not concerning this do I say that he should make request.
17. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
A definition of sin. Sin can be defined.
18. We know that whosoever is begotten of God sinneth not; but he that was begotten of God keepeth himself, and the evil one toucheth him not.
A son of God is a soul away from sin.
The Son of God keeps him; and he keeps himself from getting away from God. There is a unity established.
The evil one is not mighty enough to hurt the sons of God.
19. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in the evil one.
We are communicating with those of our likeness. This is Holy communion.
We know the world is dying, ready to pass away.
We have the hope of a new heaven and earth, a new Jerusalem with God being its light.
We came to know the difference between good and evil, God and the evil one.
God has allowed Himself an opponent. The evil one will still pass away. Chaos does not stand.
20. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
A certainty.
Our understanding is from the Son of God. We did not just come to know. We have a helper.
No human soul is as great as God. This knowledge is true.
We should know where our knowledge stems from.
Eternal life is being with God. The Father has planned and finished His everlasting Covenant before time (Isa 55). Tetelestai - it is done/finished. Salvation is established.
Eternal death is being away from God forever.
21. My little children, guard yourselves from idols.
Listen to the Father.
Idols may harm anybody. Idols and idol worship advance in the minds of mankind.
Be on guard. Not lead a loss life. Be on the positive. No slackness.
Examine ourselves. Check and check. Take action. Make sure. Be positive. Be watchful. Be a good watchman.
Deviation from God, the Righteous One is death, unrighteousness, sin, darkness, not having done what ought to be done. Not relying on the Supplier of living water.
