3 John
Third letter from John, a very short letter.
3John -ASV
1. The elder unto Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.
The elder whom Gaius know. Gaius knows that he is loved in truth.
The gain of walking in truth is being loved in truth. Staying/lingering in truth.
2. Beloved, I pray that in all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
A loving letter. A letter of prayer.
In love, John sought for the increase of good of his beloved.
3. For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth.
His rejoicing is not of selfish motive. He dwells on the welfare of others.
Speak of the truth of the brethren everywhere.
4. Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.
This is indeed my greatest joy. Selfish motives simply are not joyful enough.
Hearing is believing.
Walk in the truth. Do not walk by sight. But walk in righteousness. This is the meaning of love.
5. Beloved, thou doest a faithful work in whatsoever thou doest toward them that are brethren and strangers withal;
There are different kinds of work; not all must be faithful work.
Works alone do not justify righteousness.
Be faithful in Christ, in His commission, in fellowship. No hypocrisy.
6. who bare witness to thy love before the church: whom thou wilt do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God:
This is your love that you walk in truth.
7. because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
Take nothing from the uncircumcised in/of heart.
Be holy. Be pure. Be a witness for the truth.
Do not serve 2 masters.
8. We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.
Let us work together for the truth.
Fellowship in the truth; not in truth only.
9. I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
There is evil jealousy. There is a lack of love and care, and unity.
Let us live in unity and in truth. In the unity of the truth.
Love unites. hatred destroys.
10. Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth them out of the church.
Expose deeds. Pass judgement according to the truth. What has light with darkness?
Evil person and evil deeds do find their ways into the church/assemblies. Problems from within rather than just from without.
11. Beloved, imitate not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
Imitate love and that which is good and godly. Do not follow example of evil although we may know them when we are in sin.
Be holy. Stay away from evil and darkness. Be children of light.
Having some good is not do good. A little evil poison the whole deed, personality.
This is a black and white picture. The person either do good or do evil. Where his heart is, there he will be as well.
12. Demetrius hath the witness of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, we also bear witness: and thou knowest that our witness is true.
Witnesses are not exclusive to the apostles.
13. I had many things to write unto thee, but I am unwilling to write them to thee with ink and pen:
Writing alone is not enough.
Writing is not the only solution and the whole solution to express the truth and love of God.
Fellowship enhences the truth and brotherly love.
14. but I hope shortly to see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be unto thee. The friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.
Same hope as in 2 John, that speaking face to face is desirable.
Words alone does not convey all the love of God. He came.
Your brethrens are like your friends. They are not there just by relation. They interact with you. They act for you.
They have names you know as well. Remind them your love and care by your salutation by name. Have individualistic care.
