Back to Part 1
I think David Lim may not have read the Catholic Catechism:
I have no wish to start a theological battle, indeed my aim, with that of the Order of St Isidore of Seville, is to look to the common ground between Christians rather than any doctrinal differences. We are all mere mortals with our own prejudices, whether we care to recognise them or not, so we tend to judge others on what WE want them to say or believe, rather than what they actually do and believe. If we take the time to learn about the beliefs of others we can have a better understanding and if we then have a criticism, it is more informed than the "knee jerk" rant than some are prone to.
As for what the Roman Catholic Church does believe; below is an extract from the Catechism of the Catholic Church on this topic. From it I would say their statement would be that they have the Scriptures AND Tradition. Indeed, I think that the Anglican and Orthodox churches would be hard pushed to disagree:
II. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRADITION AND SACRED SCRIPTURE
One common source. . .
80 "Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture, then, are bound closely together, and communicate one with the other. For both of them, flowing out from the same divine well-spring, come together in some fashion to form one thing, and move towards the same goal."[40] Each of them makes present and fruitful in the Church the mystery of Christ, who promised to remain with his own "always, to the close of the age".
[41]
. . . two distinct modes of transmission 81 "Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit."
[42]
"And [Holy] Tradition transmits in its entirety the Word of God which has been entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit. It transmits it to the successors of the apostles so that, enlightened by the Spirit of truth, they may faithfully preserve, expound and spread it abroad by their preaching."
[43]
82 As a result the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is entrusted, "does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone.
Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honoured with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence."
[44]
(My emphasis) Apostolic Tradition and ecclesial traditions 83 The Tradition here in question comes from the apostles and hands on what they received from Jesus' teaching and example and what they learned from the Holy Spirit. The first generation of Christians did not yet have a written New Testament, and the New Testament itself demonstrates the process of living Tradition. Tradition is to be distinguished from the various theological, disciplinary, liturgical or devotional traditions, born in the local churches over time. These are the particular forms, adapted to different places and times, in which the great Tradition is expressed.
In the light of Tradition, these traditions can be retained, modified or even abandoned under the guidance of the Church's Magisterium.D.Lim: By the same token, 1+1=1; scriptures + tradition = scriptures.
Canonical scriptures + Deutero-canonical scriptures = canonical scriptures.
Of course not.
Sola Scriptura is Sola Scriptura. Not plus tradition, other christians' words, living epistles, council declaration, and so on.
From the extract above, the Church's Magisterium may over-rule traditions of the Apostles and churches as well; thus having superior authority over the Apostles and scriptures.
One slave cannot serve two masters. He will love one and hate the other. (Matt6v24, Luke16v13)
Christians cannot serve the Most High God and Ba-al together.
Your later parent is Roman Catholic, does not mean you should fight the truth and righteousness by professing that it is alright to be Roman Catholic believing in your heart that your parent is in Heaven alright. Shouldn't the judgement be left to God according to your understanding of "Do not judge!"?
Interesting to see that people rise up quickly to condemn judgement that say "NO" to something they might enjoy; but rejoice and praise judgement that say "YES" to something, especially when this something is to their delight and advantage. Shouldn't such railing judgement against passing judgement (such as - Do Not Judge!) be designated as "biased" and "unrighteous"?
Pope asks Catholics to combat rise of evangelical sects
The Associated Press ROME (March 25, 2001 6:07 p.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - In an ongoing effort to revitalize waning enthusiasm among many Roman Catholics, Pope John Paul II continued his appeal to the faithful Sunday to fight competition from evangelical sects.
In the past, the pontiff's warnings about the rise of sects have come mainly during pilgrimages to places like Latin America, where long-standing Catholic communities are seeing many of their faithful defect to such groups.
This time, John Paul took his battle cry to a parish on the outskirts of Rome, where at least one evangelical group has a base. "In your neighborhood, in fact, the challenge of sects isn't absent," the pope told the parishioners.
He urged them to show "more faithfulness and courage in carrying out the great undertaking of the `new evangelization"' - a reference to his determination to shore up faith among Roman Catholics in the church's third millennium.
"It's an urgent task," he said.It does not take too long to see those who seem to be ill-spoken of, judged of, to act against others.
So much about Christian love and unity.
I am sure the devil can quote scriptures better than us.
D.Lim: Would you ever say this statement is true when you overpower your opponents, young pastors, servants of God with your quotations, population, and political power?
