Fasting in Jeremiah

"Fast" in Jer 8v5; 14v12; 36v6; 36v9; 50v33

"Fasting" and "fasted" not used.

Jeremiah 8v5: not related to fasting

8:4 你要對他們說, 耶和華如此說, 人跌倒, 不再起來麼. 人轉去, 不再轉來麼.

Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return? - KJV

8:5 這耶路撒冷的民, 為何恆久背道呢. 他們守定詭詐, 不肯回頭.

Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.

8:6 我留心聽, 聽見他們說不正直的話. 無人悔改惡行, 說, 我作的是甚麼呢. 他們各人轉奔己路, 如馬直闖戰場.

I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.

8:7 空中的鸛鳥知道 (.來去的.) 定期. 斑鳩燕子與白鶴也守候當來的時令. 我的百姓卻不知道耶和華的法則.

Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.

Jeremiah 14v12:

14:12 他們禁食的時候, 我不聽他們的呼求. 他們獻燔祭和素祭, 我也不悅納. 我卻要用刀劍, 饑荒, 瘟疫滅絕他們.

When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.

Fasting for the sake of God listening to the cry of those who fast. Yet God choose whether He would listen.

14:13 我就說, 唉. 主耶和華阿, 那些先知常對他們說, 你們必不看見刀劍, 也不遭遇饑荒. 耶和華要在這地方賜你們長久的平安.

Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.

14:14 耶和華對我說, 那些先知託我的名說假預言, 我並沒有打發他們, 沒有吩咐他們, 也沒有對他們說話. 他們向你們預言的, 乃是虛假的異象和占卜, 並虛無的事, 以及本心的詭詐.

Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

The prophets went for false vision and divination.(deadly sins)

The people are destroyed for ignorance(lack of knowledge of God). They were told by false prophets that they were doing alright.

Jeremiah 36v6:

36:6 所以你要去趁禁食的日子, 在耶和華殿中將耶和華的話, 就是你從我口中所寫在書卷上的話, 念給百姓和一切從猶大城邑出來的人聽.

Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD's house upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.

There is an official day for fasting. Assembly takes place during fasting. It is for reading of scriptures and prophecies, especially in the Temple of God.

Jeremiah knew during his lifetime that what he said and dictated and written down are scriptures for the people.

Those who come out of their cities into the assembly will hear what is read. Those who seek after the things of God will find.

36:7 或者他們在耶和華面前懇求各人回頭, 離開惡道, 因為耶和華向這百姓所說要發的怒氣和忿怒是大的.

It may be they will present their supplication before the LORD, and will return every one from his evil way: for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people.

A plead for repentance, to leave sin after detecting sin. A plead from the Jews � intercession. Each interceed for their sins before the Lord.

The presentation of supplication of anyone can reach God. The Lord is not too deaf to hear.

Repentance is returning to God from sin and evil way.

Jeremiah 36v9:

36:9 猶大王約西亞的兒子約雅敬第五年九月, 耶路撒冷的眾民和那從猶大城邑來到耶路撒冷的眾民, 在耶和華面前宣告禁食的日子,

And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.

The proclamation of a fast is made in Jerusalem only. Those who came into Jerusalem would hear.

36:10 巴錄就在耶和華殿的上院, 耶和華殿的新門口, 沙番的兒子文士基瑪利雅的屋內, 念書上耶利米的話給眾民聽.

Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of the LORD's house, in the ears of all the people.

Baruch did not (or could enter the Temple, and was reading the book of the words of Jeremiah at the new gate, in the chamber of a son of Shaphan the scribe.not)

36:11 沙番的孫子, 基瑪利雅的兒子米該亞聽見書上耶和華的一切話,

When Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD,

Jeremiah 50v33:

50:33 萬軍之耶和華如此說, 以色列人和猶大人一同受欺壓. 凡擄掠他們的都緊緊抓住他們, 不肯釋放.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go.

This passage is not about fasting.

50:34 他們的救贖主大有能力, 萬軍之耶和華是他的名. 他必伸清他們的冤, 好使全地得平安, 並攪擾巴比倫的居民.

Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

The Redeemer will interceed for the people, thoroughly plead their cause. He will then be able to give rest to the land/people. The redeemer will bring settlement to all parties.
