Paul's letter to the Romans

A letter/chapter of reminder

Romans 1 - ASV

1. Or are ye ignorant, brethren (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth?

Well, you know! You know the law written.

Covenant holds true with life.

2. For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband.

Death discharges covenant.

Christ died to disable sin.

3. So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man.

Action is justified by principle.

4. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God.

Not by works. But by Christ, were believers made dead to the law.

Christians cannot do anything away from Christ.

5. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

Paul talked as if he has become absolutely spiritual, not having any restrain of the flesh. Very much so, when he was so prepared to die for Christ and His people.

There was a passion against anything that is the law. The body was lusting after disobedience.

6. But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that wherein we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

We are discharged. We are off the hook. We are no longer bind by the law. We live and act in a state of lawlessness for Christ.

We cannot sin when there is no law to convict us. There is no need for Purgatory. We just do not carry or manufacture sin. We are free indeed!

We have died to sin. We have completely entered into the union of God.

We have a new spirit of holiness.

We do not live by the word of the law. So we are not convicted any more. No conviction. No sin. Only holiness with God. As white as snow - the reasoning of God.

7. What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:

Ask yourselves. Not just listening to others.

The law is not sin itself.

Babies/infants know sin through the law they learn.

8. but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin is dead.

We have a sinful nature that manifest itself through the law.

This means we did not start off sinless. Our nature is sin whenever we face the law. We are shown missing the mark when we are weighed on the balance of the law. Our properties are made known.

9. And I was alive apart from the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died;

I was alright before you know me. But I did not measure up once the law is applied.

10. and the commandment, which was unto life, this I found to be unto death:

I worked opposing to life.

11. for sin, finding occasion, through the commandment beguiled me, and through it slew me.

I am supposed to be with God and not with the commandment. I ought to be Godward rather than outward. There is no life apart from God.

Away from the union is disunity.

12. So that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.

The law is set apart from sin, so as to be distinguished from it.

13. Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good;--that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.

The law did not initiate the break away. The law did not start killing, destroying first. Sin came first. It entered the heart.

The commandment separate sin from the holy God. Clear distinction is made.

14. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

The carnal me did not attain to spiritual. But sin reaches the carnal.

15. For that which I do I know not: for not what I would, that do I practise; but what I hate, that I do.

I was not in control.

I practised that I do not belong.

16. But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good.

The law is not sin. I am in sin. I was not good like the law.

17. So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.

Sin works sin through me.

18. For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good is not.

It did not start with a sinless holy baby. It started with no good thing.

My mind belongs to God, the Holy One. My body was bind by sin.

19. For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practise.

I was forced to work out evil. My mind could not control my action. I was hopeless and helpless.

The righteousness of God in love would act against this evil.

20. But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.

Sin like a virus, used my faculties to work evil and sin.

21. I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present.

Evil is already there. It was in control.

22. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

My mind has always been Godward.

23. but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.

My mind fought a lossing battle. Sin is in my members.

24. Wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death?

I am helpless without a redemption.

I am helpless if there is no salvation.

25. I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I of myself with the mind, indeed, serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

God is in sight. Jesus Christ is our Lord/master. Sin is not.

This speaks of imputed righteousness, that sin of the flesh is covered up. My self and mind serve the law of God. My imperfect flesh can no longer bring my SELF into captivity.

Sin will be done away with when I leave the flesh that serves the law of sin.

The spiritual side will live on, serving the law of God. Christians serve the law of God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Not Isa. Not Buddha. Not any other idol. Christ is our only fixation.
