Some foundation information for enquirers:-
Chinese Herbalism:
Chinese Herbalism 中草藥學 is an oversimplified term to represent Traditional Chinese Medicine 傳統中醫學.
Traditional Chinese Medicine 傳統中醫藥 is largely about treating illness by restoring natural balance through the use of herbs.
However, this is not all there is. In Traditional Chinese Medicine substances that are not herbs/vegetation material are also used. For example heavy metals such as Gold, metallic oxides such as Lead Oxide, and Iron Oxide; Excretion such as bat droppings and human droppings; shells from shellfish such as Oyster shell; dinosaus' fossils; animal skeleton such as cattle bone, fish bone and shark cartridges; Gallstones; animal skins and meat; embryos; used clay pots and stoves; in fact anything that is found in our world may be added to a concoction.
Traditional Chinese Medicine differs from other Herbalism in its system of concoction which usually consist of 4 groups in one formula for mutual assistance. A formula that contains 1 or 2 types of herbs or elements are likely to be Herbalism developed by local villagers 土醫學 or Non-Chinese Herbalism 非中藥. Herbal formulea are not necessarily less effective just because they are foreign to Traditional Chinese Medicine. They are just to be differentiated in discussion and analysis. However, they are likely to be less effective as being less comprehensive in medicinal properties and activities.
Surgery, Chinese martial Arts, Hypnosis and Physio-therapy is also used together with the ingestion of herbal extracts 飲苦茶.
Schools of treatment mainly divided into Ancestral schools and modern Academies.
Ancestral schools 祖傳的 passed their knowledge and training down privately 秘傳, usually behind closed doors. They are not only transmitted via a father and son relationship. Apprentice are accepted at times and carry the name of the tradition/school.
Such schools includes the major schools of the Kidney School, the Spleen School, the Blood School, and the Chi School.
These major Schools believe/emphasise that certain part of the body or certain element is the most crucial foundation and the source of good health. Thus all illnesses will subside if problems of that source is rectified.
These Schools are distinguished and recognised by the priority/emphasis given to certain element in their philosophy, and the way they formulate herbal doses. The element they emphasised is always analyse and treated first.
Ancestral Schools 祖傳學派(their fame) rely on word of mouth. Practitioners do not normally hold any certificate for proficiency.
Ancestral Schools prove themselves by record of recoveries/success.
Academies includes Universities and Academies of Medicine.
Doctors of such Schools boast of their academic qualification, fame of certain professors and their deeds, and position attained in hospitals.
Academies emphasise on learning from set text books and college/collective examination. Such method of selection is by no means the best in identifying proficient professionals. The reason simply lies in the fact that the text books are meant to be ancient guidelines, giving way to the changing bodies/metabolism, nature, herbs and practical experience.
People who trusted Traditional Chinese Medicine usually have a family history of entertaining such treatment. They tend to have some accumulated knowledge in the subject, and could recognise basic elements in the concoction. A doctor, therefore, is being examined by his patient everytime he is consulted and prescription administered.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is philosophical rather than scientific.
傳統中醫學並非科學﹔而是哲學。
Doctors of TCM are Philosophers 哲學家 instead of Scientists. Each philosophies illnesses and bodily imbalance by format of thought other than Science. Attempt is made in answer the question WHY. Science does not normally answer WHY.
The effect of herbs and chemicals are philosophied by their color, taste, shape and smell, and then if possible, by scientific experiment or observation.
TCM has much less side effect than Western Medicine, not because herbs are without poison or incapable of producing side-effects. It is because the adverse effect of each herb is counteracted by another herb group in the concoction. A calculated balance of effect is designed into a concoction/formula.
Is the power of healing in herbs weaker than manufactured Medicine/chemicals?
No, if they are compared as equal doses.
Western Medicine usually represent much heavier dosage, causing strong effect/reaction, and side-effect. Their concentration is much higher.
Western Medicine is regarded as better and faster agent of cure/relief because they are usually ready made. TCM normally requires cooking and absorption time, and much more work than merely swallowing some pills or receiving an injection.
西藥 Western Medicine does not always cure an illness quicker.
Take for example a common flu. A patient may get well in 8 hours after ingesting a concoction of herbal tea. How many actually recover after a night with a few pain-killer?TCM frequently fail scientific lab test because it is not tested according to the rules and principles of TCM. The testers/researchers assume that their method is scientific and must be the right method.
Laymen also pretend to be scientific and learned when they want to criticise TCM.
Nurses normally take pulse with 2 fingers. Doctors of TCM do not do that. And such people including nurses could not tell by pulse taking whether the patient is pregnant (whether it is boy or girl), diabetic or having internal injuries. So much for their scientific knowhow.
Is TCM superstitious?
傳統中醫學是否迷信?
Well, Salt was known to affect the kidneys for thousands of years in TCM. How many years ago did we first hear of that from Western Medicine?
Sugar was known to affect the spleen for thousands of years in TCM. Diabetes, though with another name, was known and treatment formulated. When was Diabetes first discovered to be related to sugar?
TCM also tells of the effect of bitter, light, hot and sour tastes to organs and more. This will be discoveries of Western Medicine in the future.
When is the last time your GP explain to you exactly how a prescribed drug would interact with your body, and how you will be cured? Do you not take medicine in good faith?
Also, are you dealing with probability or science? When were you probably right in your scientific experiment? Equation or probability? A cure for sure, or probably an improvement?
