Testimony of Anba - came to Christ during the Sino-Japanese War.
Portrait of Anba.
I was in my early 20s during the Sino-Japanese War.
I gained a good job (in a company of tele-communication) and was working near Burma, behind the Chinese border. The war was getting serious and near.
I was driving on the road when stopped by some 20 KMT Chinese soldiers. They required the truck for service, and we were travelling together, packed.
I was made to stop wherever there were other vehicles on the road, and let them all pass us. Those cars that broke down were pushed down the mountain beside the road. There are no hope of repair.
After a few stops we came to the bridge (Tien Mein Highway) that joined the entrance of Burma to China. The Japanese were bombing this bridge from above to destroy this route, but without success. The mountains were steep and huge. The planes and missiles just could not get near this bridge.
My truck became the last one to cross that bridge.
I could feel the Japanese getting nearer and nearer, as the sound of bomb shells got closer and louder.
I then realised that these soldiers on my car had a special mission - to bomb and destroy the bridge. And they succeeded.
The Japanese could not cross this bridge and kept firing on the mountain across the deep valley. They could see us on the other side. So we stayed during day time and walk at night.
The Japanese then fired over ten (a dozen or so) shots with their canons and destroyed all the turning points of the zig zag passage. We could not drive further as the road was cut to sections. We all stopped our cars and walked.
All I had was a vacuum flask; and I drank from it. A bomb shell exploded close to me with such a loud bang shocked me. I jumped out of the car with the flask while drinking.
I heard a voice saying to me - Fear not! I will take care of you. You are going to be alright.
I then prayer to God (Sheng Ti) - If you are real, save my life! and I will believe you.
I now know that I should not have been so rude as to bargain with my Lord. But at that time I knew too little of Him for sufficient respect.
I escaped unhurt.
So, according to my promise to the Lord God, I will believe in Him.
I had to discard the flask, my only personal property, as I got tired and the weight of the flask seemed to grow beyond what I could bear. I threw it down the mountain.
I searched for food in the abandoned cars, only to find dead bodies.
I found a house with people, but they had no food for me. I was given some money to buy food. The journey for food purchase would take a whole day on foot. I walked to the nearest market place half a day away and met some missionaries.
They asked me if I would believe in God, and I told them my promise (bargain with God). So they baptised me crudely with water. I was immersed though I knew very little about God.
I prayed to God to take care of me that I may live.
And the Lord heard my prayer. I was not hurt throughout the war; and managed to get to Hong Kong after the war ended.
He has taken care of me, and my knowledge of the christian faith increases as I fellowshiped with many christian groups in Hong Kong during resettlement.
He has not left me even when I come to Canada.
I have now believed in Jesus Christ for some fifty years.
I pray that this testimony warms and encourages your heart, to serve the Lord with all your strength, all your mind and all your soul / life. Amen.
